Edit 2 for headphones. With scans of my vinyl's sleeve, skillfully messed up by me... (the last three pictures are not edited). "Little by little" was the b-side to "Not fade away", recorded on January 28, 1964. Release date: February 21, 1964. The first Rolling Stones record I heard, at the age of about ten years old. It was on the first UK album "The Rolling Stones", release date: April 17, 1964, and on the first US album "England's newest hit makers, The Rolling Stones", released May 29, 1964.
Guitars: Brian Jones & Keith Richards. Vocal: Mick Jagger. Drums: Charlie Watts. Bass: Bill Wyman. Harmonica: Mick Jagger. Piano: Gene Pitney, Ian Stewart. Maracas: Phil Spector.
The song is by "Phelge/Spector" (Phelge refers to the song being a Mick Jagger/Brian Jones/Keith Richards/Charlie Watts/Bill Wyman collaborative composition), but it is an imitation of "Shame, shame, shame" by Jimmy Reed. Listen to "Shame, shame, shame" and you hear almost the same song as "Little by little"... though I must admit that - and I am very unprejudiced - the Stones did a much better job.
LITTLE BY LITTLE
(Nanker/Phelge/Phil Spector)
tried to trail you last night, baby, trail you in my car
but I was afraid of what I was looking for now
little by little I'm losing my love for you
yeah little by little I, found out you was untrue
alright, Keith, come on, now
my turn
well I try not to bear a grudge, a girl's gonna hitch a ride
things ain't been the same, since my mother died
yeah little by little I'm losing my love for you
yeah little by little I found out you was untrue
let's get out of here, come on
