An Orkney Wedding, With Sunrise by Sir Peter Maxwell Davies
The English composer Sir Maxwell Davies completed this short work for orchestra in December of 1984. The work was a commission from the ‘Boston Pops’, a group comprised of the same orchestra members as the Boston Symphony Orchestra, minus the principal players. The Boston pops were formed in 1885, with their name being an abbreviation of ‘Boston Populars’ (they specialized in performing popular light music and light classical music).
The commission from the Boston Pops was to commemorate their 100th anniversary, and Davies agreed to provide the work but asked that the Pops organize for a Bagpipe player to be hired to perform the finale. The work was premiered on the 10th of May 1985.
The inspiration for the content of the work is based on the period of time that Davie spent on the island of Hoy in the Orkneys from 1971 until 1981. The island had a small community, resulting in Davies becoming familiar with all the other inhabitants. When a wedding took place on the island in the late 1970’s, Davies was in attendance. It was this wedding that Davies cites as giving him the basis for this composition.
The work is comprised of a single movement.
