Jesus warned the Church in Sardis that they had the reputation that they were alive, but they were actually dead. He warned them to repent before it was too late. By saying this, Jesus made it clear that it is possible to think you're alive when you're actually dead - to think you're a Christian when really you're not. It is important for Christians today to recognize this and ask, "what does it mean to really be a Christian, and how do I know I'm not like the Church in Sardis? How do I know my reputation of being a Christian is really how God sees me?"
