Mo Chraoibhin Cno by Anna MacManus

For St. Patrick's Day this year I am setting to music this beautiful poem by Anna MacManus (writing as Ethna Carbery), published in 1902 in 'The Four Winds of Eirinn':

Anna's work was published by her husband, Seumas MacManus, she died just one year after they were married.

Anna was involved in the nationalist monthly, The Shan Van Vocht, and was also a founding member of Inghinidhe na hÉireann:

'Mo Chraoibhin Cno' translates to 'my tree nuts', but is being used here in the poem as a pet name for Ireland, and can also refer to someone with brown hair. Anna may have read the poem by the same name written by Edward Walsh, referenced in this 1853 book:
