Symphony No. 2 ‘A London Symphony’ by Ralph Vaughan Williams

Vaughan Williams began composition on this symphony at some point shortly before 1914, however the original manuscript is now lost. Vaughan Williams would revise the symphony again in 1936. The work was dedicated to fellow composer George Butterworth, who was killed by sniper fire in the Somme in 1916.

The first performance of the original version was given in March of 1914 at the Queen’s Hall in London. Vaughan Williams indicated that while this symphony was not an example of program music meant to visualise a specific narrative, it is meant to give the listener a sense of the ‘sounds’ of 1914 London.

The work is comprised of four movements:
I. Lento – Allegro risoluto
II. Lento
III. Scherzo (Nocturne)
IV. Finale
