*Note: There have been multiple 'golden ages' in many places throughout the world at various points in time, which Dr.Friedman would not have been aware of (through no fault of his own as he was an economist, not a historian).
All of those periods were temporary and (without self-correction) followed the same trajectory of decline that Dr.Friedman describes.
The Universe is self-correcting. Human beings can take the initiative and correct themselves, but there's only so much pressure that can be built up before it has to discharge*
