"The annual Carnival parade in the Belgian city of Aalst went ahead on Sunday, despite being stripped of its UNESCO cultural heritage status last year over anti-Semitism accusations.
The event featured participants dressed in costumes representing Jewish stereotypes, with some wearing the shtreimel, a fur hat worn by hassids, or displaying golden teeth and hooked noses.
Revellers stressed that the parade was meant to poke fun at Jewish people, rather than being an anti-Semitic or racist event.
"If you are a Jew you are included. You are included in our Carnival. If we laugh with you that means we like you. If we laugh with you, we love you," said one.
Earlier this week, the Israeli Foreign Minister urged the Belgian government to ban the parade, but criticism was dismissed by the city authorities who defended the costumes as 'satirica'."
