New Orleans hooker Gilda Karlson (Dorothy Mackaill) is wanted for manslaughter and stows away to a small Carribbean island with no extradition laws. Boarding at the island's only hotel she becomes acquainted with the other "inmates": a group of similarly exiled crooks and Ne'er-do-wells. Safe in Hell is a 1931 American pre-Code film directed by William A. Wellman, featuring "Black Garbo" Nina Mae McKinney as the hotelier. The film is included in the Library of Congress collection.
