'Maslow’s hierarchy of needs is a theory of psychology explaining human motivation based on the pursuit of different levels of needs. The theory states that humans are motivated to fulfill their needs in a hierarchical order. This order begins with the most basic needs before moving on to more advanced needs. The ultimate goal, according to this theory, is to reach the fifth level of the hierarchy: self-actualization.'
*Note: Just as an individual (or a group of individuals) can regress back down the hierarchy into a lower dimension of desires/needs, an individual can also transcend or minimize the lower needs/desires (fame, riches, lavish food, sex, alcohol, drugs etc.) to pursue the higher states of self-actualization and peak experiences.
*Note2: The exact order of the lower and mid-level needs will vary according to culture, geographical location and time.

"And hence it is, that to feel much for others and little for ourselves, that to restrain our selfish, and to indulge our benevolent affections, constitutes the perfection of human nature; and can alone produce among mankind that harmony of sentiments and passions in which consists their whole grace and propriety."
- Adam Smith
"Accept everything just the way it is.
Do not seek pleasure for its own sake.
Do not, under any circumstances, depend on a partial feeling.
Think lightly of yourself and deeply of the world."
- Miyamoto Musashi
