"those spirits that were in prison"... Those who were saved of the days of Noah, but are in prison... What prison? Purgatory. Purgatory is to purify & chastise the faithful with due punishment for venial, lesser sins or already forgiven mortal sins - this is so that the righteous may be made worthy to enter heaven, as no one can enter Heaven with any stain of sin (Apocalypse 21:27). Hence the purifying flames of Purgatory. However, dying with the stain of unforgiven mortal sin sends one to Hell. Baptism (which can only be done once - Eph. 4:5) washes away all sin & all punishment due to sin, mortal & venial (assuming one who is of the age of reason accepts the Catholic faith at the time of baptism). Mortal sins commited after valid baptism require confession to a valid Catholic priest ordained in a traditional rite for absolution (see Matthew 5:17-18, Luke 5:13-14, John 20:21-23, Matthew 9:6-8, 2 Corinthians 5:18) & the Catholic Faith to avoid Hell.

Catholics pray for the dead, who suffer in Purgatory according to the Bible. If you die in venial sin & have not done enough penance in God's eyes to be worthy of immediately entering heaven yet were forgiven of any grave sins (via confession or baptism), then you go to Purgatory.
