Grammar
(Answers the question of the Who, What, Where, and the When of a subject.)
The Grammar stage is where you always begin. Obtaining the basic facts, gaining familiarity with concepts and principles of any subject and repetition are keys to this stage. As you are only seeking to become familiar with the general territory of a body of knowledge, intimate details are not yet necessary but rather a broad view is sought out by acquiring the raw material of knowledge upon which higher levels of understanding can be built.
Just like learning the alphabet and basic arithmetic lays the groundwork for more advanced reading and math, mastering the Grammar stage in any field, sets the stage for deeper comprehension and critical thinking. Repetition helps to ingrain new knowledge into the mind which helps the mind to make sense of the information faster, so by absorbing as much as you can about the subject, the more information you have to work with and organize, make sense of--- OR ---the better we “know” something, the better we can “understand” it.
Logic
(Answers the Why of a subject.)
Logic follows Grammar and serves as the process of reasoning and making sense of the information gathered during the Grammar stage. This is where we seek to understand how the pieces of knowledge fit together and how to evaluate their relationships.
Logic builds upon Grammar by organizing and structuring the information acquired during the Grammar stage and moving beyond mere knowledge acquisition, to now checking it for consistency, discerning truth from falsehood… Does all of the information agree with one another, or are there contradictions? Looking for any deeper patterns, and understand how to use that knowledge effectively. Are we making informed decisions? Through the Logic stage, we come to know what something is by eliminating contradictions and “making sense” of the information.
Rhetoric
(Provides the How of a subject.)
Rhetoric, the third component of the Trivium, builds upon the foundation laid by Grammar and Logic. While Grammar focuses on acquiring knowledge and Logic on organizing and understanding it, Rhetoric concerns itself with the effective communication and expression of that knowledge.
Rhetoric extends to the ability to effectively share knowledge and convey ideas, emotions, and intentions in any medium or context. This is where our understanding of a subject is then put into our own words, as we move the information from the mental to the verbal. To fully attain the Rhetoric stage is similar to learning a subject in such a way so as to teach it, not simply to know or understand it. Rhetoric deals with the application of knowledge and understanding into forms of Wisdom.
