"If there is anything good about nobility it is that it enforces the necessity of avoiding degeneracy. In other living creatures ignorance of self is nature; in man it is vice. Man is so constituted that he then only excels other things when he knows himself. Who would give a law to lovers? Love is unto itself a higher law."
― Boethius
Late in Manly Hall's career, he videotaped a handful of his Sunday lectures. This one was on August 20, 1989, one year before his death. He is still sharp and engaging as ever, thoughtful and considerate as always.
He starts with the tragic redemption of the philosopher, Boethius, who found salvation in his inner life in prison before his execution. Hall goes on to discuss the way the ancients regarded human emotions as beings, or gods. Of these, Truth was held in high esteem, and that Truth is Love.
Manly Hall's kindly words of hope and growth, of seeking beauty and seeing life everywhere, right true today as in all ages. That the Universe is alive, wise and good. That our bodies and souls can be great sources of wisdom and healing. But this all takes responsibility, work and discipline from each individual.
