Missa Caput by Johannes Ockeghem

Ockeghem likely completed this musical setting of the Catholic Mass in 1450. This particular setting of the Mass first came to prominence in the 1440’s, and is believed to have originated in England. The Missa Caput became of the most popular musical versions of the Mass and was adapted by several composers. It includes all five sections of the Ordinary of the Mass, the Kyrie, Gloria, Credo, Sanctus and Agnus Dei.

An important feature of this adaptation of the Mass is the inclusion of a freely composed bass line, replacing the tenor as the lowest voice range. The inclusion of this bass line would allow for larger chords and in turn chord progressions.
