When it was founded in 2010 the whole point of the Alt-Right was to avoid nationalist and race realist ideas being smeared as "Nazi". But in November 2016, shortly after Trump was elected President, Richard Spencer crashed the movement into a wall by putting on a Nazi-theme NPI conference and by infamously shouting "Heil Trump, Heil our people, Heil Victory" (Sieg Heil) at the end of his closing speech to Nazi salutes from some in the audience.

This proved to be extremely embarrassing to many of the guests, including Jared Taylor. Taylor has always presented nationalist and race realist ideas in a moral and sensible way designed to maximize their appeal. Shortly after the disastrous conference, he was interviewed by Kristoffer Rønneberg the American correspondent of Aftenpost a Norwegian newspaper, and gave his views on Spencer and the Nazification of the Alt-Right.
