Mozart completed this symphony in March of 1773 at the age of 17, shortly after returning from his third and final tour of Italy with his father Leopold. Mozart’s return to Salzburg from Italy would be bittersweet. While he was unsuccessful in obtaining a position within a royal court of Europe, he would be granted the role of court musician to the ruler of Salzburg, Prince-Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo.

Mozart would later find discover that service to the Prince-Archbishop was stable, but intolerable, and his disfavour with the court of Salzburg would be the primary reason for his relocation to Vienna in 1781.

This symphony is comprised of three movements:
I. Molto presto
II. Andante
III. Allegro
