General Judgment and Canonizations

At the beginning of Advent we consider the 2nd Coming while we consider the 1st Coming as we approach closer to Christmas. Perhaps an easy way to grasp something of the mystery of the General Judgment that takes place at the end of time and why it is important for us right now, is to consider the Church’s traditional process of canonizing saints. This comparison or analogy is fitting because in the end, everyone that is saved is added to the list of the elect… which is what canon literally means… list. In the end everyone in the choir of the sheep is canonized! It seems, then, the canonization process prefigures in some way the General Judgment. In times past, it was part of this procedure that before any saintly person could be officially canonized, their good effect upon the world had to be established. This is reflected in the canonization procedures of old in that a cause for sainthood could only be considered after the person was dead for at least 50 years. This delay was done not only to prevent false enthusiasm, emotions, and political motives from influencing sound reason but also to see what legacy they left. If the proposed saint’s works and writings caused confusion, his process was discontinued. If they produced clarity and fruits, then they would go continue. So, from this we can see what we do with ourselves in this world lives on after we die, either for good or for ill. How these works affect the rest of mankind is why there is a General Judgment.
