Tchaikovsky completed this orchestral tone poem in 1876 on behalf of a commission from the Russian Musical Society. The society was organising a benefit concert for Serbian soldiers wounded in an uprising against the occupying Ottoman empire, known as the Serbo-Turkish War of 1876.

The work was premiered in November of 1876 in Moscow. The concert was a success and the proceeds were directed to assist Serbian veterans during their attempt to regain independence from the Ottomans.
