the nice - america - stereo remix
edit for headphones. The British band The Nice had a big hit with this instrumental rearrangement of Leonard Bernstein's song in 1968. Nr.11 in Holland, nr.16 in the UK.
Formed in 1967 as a backing group for P.P. Arnold, a performer who reached a higher level of popularity in the UK than her native US. Unhappy with her backing band, The Blue Jays, she wanted a replacement. Her driver suggested Keith Emerson would be able to put together such a group. Emerson agreed, but only on the condition the band could perform on their own as a warm-up act. Since it effectively meant getting two bands for the price of one, manager Andrew Loog Oldham readily a(greed)(;-). Emerson recruited Jackson, drummer Ian Hague (former Chris Farlowe & The Thunderbirds as well as a Mark Leeman Five member), and finally ex-the Attack guitarist David O'List. Ian Hague soon was replaced by drummer Brian Davison. O'List left the group after their big success of "America".
The name came from P.P. Arnold saying, "Here comes the Naz", which the group misheard as "the Nice". Early 1970 they disbanded.
I re added the mono single's child's voice that was removed from the stereo album version. Bad decision to take that part away imo, just like the release of such a poor stereo mix on a remastered(!) album ("the thoughts of emerlist davjack" - 2003) this edit was made of...
