I wanted a microphone to use for voiceovers on my PC and due to technical issues too tedious to go into it had to be a USB condenser. I looked around and this one seemed to have consistently good reviews together with a range of options that might prove useful in the future. The £88 price tag seemed pretty good too given the features on offer and evident build quality.
There are two models of this mic, my one which has a 96 kHz Sampling rate and a substantially cheaper but otherwise identical model that samples at 48Khz, which is fact is all most users including me actually need.
It feels well made and substantial in the hand, comes supplied with a 3-meter braided cable and a well printed but not very informative user guide. It is a pity no pop filter or storage case is included in the box, however. It does come with a built-in adjustable desk stand but this can be easily removed for use on a mic stand or boom arm. Build quality is first rate and this looks and feels like a quality piece of kit with upmarket packaging and presentation reinforcing it.
The microphone has 4 polar patterns- Cardioid, Omnidirectional, Bidirectional, and Stereo which are selectable using a button on the front of the mic with coloured LEDs to show the active pattern, on the front also is the mic mute button with status LED. On the rear are rotary controls to vary the microphone output gain and change the volume of the headphone port with a large LED bar display on the front to show the current level of each. It is annoying that this LED bar does not act as a peak reaction meter to show the current live input volume. On the underside is a LED mood light with colour selection button , USB-C port, 3.5mm Headphone port, and as standard tripod mount.
It connects to your Mac or PC via USB-C which is smaller, neater and more up to date than standard USB. The braided cable is heavy duty, sensibly long, and is detachable rather than hard wired, so any good quality USB-C cable can be used. The headphone port offers zero latency monitoring of the microphone output.
Most importantly is the sound, and this mic has a hiss and crackle free audio that is full and rich, especially when used in close. There is plenty of gain and I found that at a distance of up to three feet with a 75% gain setting on the mic outputted a signal strong enough to require no further enhancement in my editing software during post production. Sound quality, for me at any rate, is excellent or better.
This is a good quality mic, robust and well made and with an audio quality more than adequate for professional use. I am very happy with it and am happy to recommend it to anyone needing a decent quality USB studio mic that will not break the bank.
