Mozart completed this symphony in 1788 while working in Vienna. It is likely this symphony was to be performed as unified work with the Symphony No. 39 and Symphony No. 40. It would be the last symphony Mozart composed before his death in 1791.
The nickname ‘Jupiter’ is likely from comments made by English music publisher Johann Peter Salomon mentioning the stirring introductory chords reminded Salomon of Jupiter and his thunder bolts.

The work is comprised of three movements:
I. Allegro vivace
II. Andante cantabile
III. Menuetto: Allegretto
IV. Molto allegro
