THE GREAT FAMINE OF GOD’S WORD --- “Behold, the days come, says the Lord God, that I will send a famine in the land, not a famine of bread, nor a thirst for water, but of hearing the words of the Lord.” (Amos 8:11)
Every single word in the bible is inspired by the Holy Spirit to feed the hearts and minds of those who are reborn in Christ. The bible is not primarily concerned with earthly things. Don’t get me wrong; the bible does deal with real earthly events and people and sicknesses and physical needs, but its primary purpose is to raise us up from the dead through faith in Christ, and feed us spiritually. Once we're in communion with God through Jesus, our bodies and material needs will be blessed by God as well. (see Mt 6:33)
In John’s Gospel, Jesus is constantly dealing with people who interpret His words in earthly terms. Nicodemus thought of physical re-birth, but Jesus was speaking of spiritual re-birth (Jn 3:3). The woman at the well wanted physical water, but Jesus offered her Living Water; that is, spiritual life in Christ as a free gift from God. (Jn 4:14) The crowds wanted Jesus to be an earthly king and to multiply earthly bread. But Jesus rejected all earthly thinking, and told them plainly that his kingdom is NOT of this world. (Jn 18:36) The Bread that he came to give is not earthly, but the Bread of His own Life, sacrificed on the cross, so that anyone who hungers for more than what this world has to offer, can receive it as a free gift through faith in Him alone. (Jn 6:51)
With that said, let’s recall the famous story of Joseph and the great famine in the Old Testament (see Genesis 41). The story is not merely about God providing physical bread. In that story, Pharaoh had a dream where God revealed that a great famine was coming upon Egypt. The land of Egypt, of course, is a symbol of the ‘world’ that believers are spiritually called to come out of… and to be set apart wholly for God and His purposes.
Through Joseph, God revealed the meaning of Pharaoh’s dream: “Indeed seven years of great plenty will come… but after them, seven years of famine will arise, and all the plenty will be forgotten… and the famine will deplete the land... [and the famine] will be very severe.” (see Gen 41:29-32)
In our own times, the days of material prosperity and earthly security are fast disappearing. Many are clinging to the false hope that the world will quickly return to material abundance and security. But, as those hopes fade, and the realization grows that turbulent times are upon us, the door of some people’s hearts will become open to receive the good news of their only Savior Jesus Christ.
Believers who have made the Word of God their life and greatest treasure will be used powerfully by God in the coming days... to raise the (spiritually) dead to life; to feed the (spiritually) hungry, to heal the sick, and set the captives free from the lies and enslavements of this world.
"Go ye into all the world, and preach the gospel to every creature. He that believes and is baptized shall be saved; but he that believes not shall be condemned." (Mk 16:15-16) "For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believes in him should not perish, but have everlasting life.” (John 3:16)
