The Foibe Massacre:
The Foibe are karst caves of natural origin with an entrance on the earth's surface. Between 1943 and 1947, almost ten thousand Italians were thrown into these abysses.
A crime unparalleled in history happened immediately after the signing of the ceasefire. On September 8, 1943, thousands of Italians were massacred by communist partisans in Istria and Dalmatia.
The Communists considered them "enemies of the people". The indescribable violence increased again in the spring of 1945, when Yugoslavia occupied Trieste, Gorizia and Istria.
Marshal Tito unleashed his troops against the Italian population. Italian women, old people and children were rounded up in a manhunt, tortured, raped, mutilated and murdered ... .. or thrown alive into the karst caves.
It was a carnage that testified to a political-ideological hatred and ended in an ethnic cleansing that Tito wanted to destroy any potential opposition in future Yugoslavia.
The persecution and killing lasted until the spring of 1947 when the border between Italy and Yugoslavia was determined. But the misery of the Istrians and Dalmatians did not end there either.
In February 1947 Italy ratified the peace treaty and the Istrian and Dalmatian kingdoms were ceded to Yugoslavia. Three hundred and fifty thousand people were displaced afterwards or fled the communist terror.
On 10 February 2005, the Italian Parliament dedicated a day of remembrance to the victims of the Foibe massacre. Today begins work on one of the most terrible crimes of communist tyranny.
