According to the new report by the UN, India will overtake China as the world’s most populous country adding nearly 273 million people between 2019 and 2050. Just 9 countries will be responsible for more than half the projected population growth by 2050. These countries are India, Nigeria, Pakistan, Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania, Indonesia, Egypt, and the US.
The report is based on population estimates from 1950 to the present for 235 countries or areas.
On the other hand, the global fertility rate is estimated to slow down to 2.2 births per woman by 2050, to an average of 3.2 in 1990. This is due to increasing education and employment, especially for women.
A fertility level of minimum 2.1 births per woman is necessary to avoid national population decline.
According to Un, many of the fastest growing populations are in the poorest countries. And this growth of population will bring additional challenges in the effort to eradicate poverty.
The report says the falling population size can be reinforced by high rates of emigration. Migration flows have become a major reason for population change in certain regions like Bangladesh, the Philippines, and Syria. And immigration is expected to plug the gaps of population, particularly in Belarus, Estonia, and Germany.
According to the UN report, the proportion of older people is increasing. The report says that there will be one in six people over 65 by 2050. This higher proportion of older people are expected to put increased financial pressure on countries in the coming decades.
