Haydn completed this symphony in 1764. It is one of the many he would compose on behalf of the Esterházy family. Haydn began his association with the Esterházy family in 1761 when he was given the role of Vice-Kapellmeister, but it is clear that Haydn was essentially given full responsibility for the musical establishment of the household soon after his appointment, with the current Kapellmeister, Gregor Werner, only responsible for church music.

This symphony is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro 00:00
II. Adagio 05:19
III. Menuet – Trio 09:10
IV. Allegro 13:44
