In the laboratory, artemisinin has been shown to kill the plasmodium [parasite] faster than any other drug that has ever been known. When it makes contact with the plasmodium, they explode creating free radicals [proteins] that are then bound through the peroxide link in Artemisinin and so the malaria parasite cannot live anymore.
The peroxide bridge [02] is open when it comes in contact with Iron, because the parasite is eating red blood cells everyday it has a lot of iron. Artemisinin swimming in blood finds the parasite and destroys it.
