Mozart completed this work for orchestra in 1771 at the age of 15. The divertimento format normally contains a small ensemble, as the work itself is meant for the amusement of a small audience, hence the term divertimento from the Italian ‘divertire’ (amuse). Mozart composed this work for a larger ensemble, however the tone of the work is still light-hearted.
