The tribe of Dan settled down and inherited the Baal worship of the Canaanites in Canaan (Judges 18:2). The tribe of Dan was the first tribe to plunge into idolatry (Judges 18). The Canaanites and their descendants have always gravitated towards the various forms of sun worship, that is why the tribe of Dan is left out of the servants of the mentioned (Revelation 7:1-8).
Dan was the 5th of 12 sons born to Jacob/Israel. Dan's mother was Bilhah, Rachel's maidservant. Rachel, the wife of Jacob, who had remained childless, was envious of her sister Leah, who had already given birth to 4 sons of Jacob. Rachel became angry at Jacob and blamed him for her childless state. In Rachel's jealousy she grabbed her maid Bilhah, and gave her to Jacob as a surrogate to have children for her. When Bilhah gave birth to Dan, Rachel considered the child her own. Rachel named him Dan, meaning "he judged", because she felt that God had judged and vindicated her through the child's birth. Jealous rivalry continued between Rachel and Leah. Rachel's maid Bilhah bore a second son to her, she called his name Naphtali. Dan and Naphtali were full brothers (Genesis 30:1-8; Deuteronomy 27:13; Exodus 1:4).
Bilhah’s own status in the household is somewhat ambiguous. She is given to Jacob as his "wife" (Hebrew ishah), although in one instance she is called his "secondary wife" (Pilegesh; NRSV, "concubine"). In the listing of Jacob's twelve sons in Chapter 35, Dan and Naphtali are presented as the "sons of Bilhah, Rachel's maid" (Verse 25).
Bilhah must have been very young when she bore her children, because Jacob's eldest son Reuben (by Leah) has sex with her (Genesis 35:22). Sleeping with one's father's wife was considered a great offense in biblical law (Leviticus 18:8; 20:11); perhaps that is why Bilhah is called his secondary wife (Pilegesh) in this one text — to diminish the gravity of the act. Jacob hears about what Reuben did and does nothing at the time. But apparently he considered it a major offense, for in his deathbed speech, he removes Reuben from his extra inheritance as firstborn and alludes to Reuben’s dreadful deed (Genesis 49:4).
