Piano Sonata No. 4 in E flat major ‘Grand Sonata’, Op. 7 by Ludwig van Beethoven

Beethoven completed this piano sonata in 1796 at the age of 26. Beethoven was on a visit to Bratislava at the time, specifically to tutor the Countess Anna Louise Barbara Keglevich (Babetta) at the Kelglevich palace in the city. Beethoven would also give a number of concerts at the palace as well as composing his piano concerto number one.

The nickname ‘Grand sonata’ was a name given by Beethoven himself, and is partly due to the length of the sonata (almost 30 minutes) but also because Beethoven would publish the sonata as an individual work.

This sonata is comprised of four movements:
I. Allegro molto e con brio 00:00
II. Largo, con gran espressione 07:49
III. Allegro - Trio 18:10
IV. Rondo: Poco allegretto e grazioso 23:00
