Sarabande and Rigaudon in E major, Op. 93 by Camille Saint-Saëns

In November of 1892, the Grand-Théâtre de Paris announced a new production of the Molière’s play “Le Malade imaginaire “(The Imaginary Invalid). The original performance of the play was accompanied by music by French composer Marc-Antonie Charpentier, however most of this original manuscript was lost. As such, the Grand-Théâtre de Paris commissioned Saint-Saëns to restore the music for the new production.

While Saint-Saëns did reconstruct accompaniment from the original Charpentier manuscript, the lack of surviving music meant Saint-Saëns composed an additional Sarabande (for orchestra) and Rigaudon (for wings and percussion). These original works would be adapted into a separate composition for orchestra simply titled ‘Sarabande and Rigaudon in E major’.
