What If Aliens Make Contact ? - Neil de Grasse Tyson on Intelligent Alien Life - 4th August 2022
What If Aliens Make Contact? - Neil deGrasse Tyson on Intelligent Alien Life
What would we do as a civilization if we found evidence for intelligent alien life? How would we deal with it?
Neil deGrasse Tyson explains why alien civilizations may be rare, even though life in general may be ubiquitous throughout the galaxy and beyond.
Neil deGrasse Tyson also explains how intelligent alien life might not think of us as intelligent given the fact how we think of chimpanzees. We share around 99% common DNA with chimps yet we cannot communicate with them. Is it hubris to even imagine we could communicate with an alien species billions of years ahead of us?
The cosmos is filled with trillions of stars. There are about 100 thousand million stars in the Milky Way alone. Many of them, are just like our own sun. Based on that number, it would seem we are most certainly not alone in the galaxy let alone in the universe.
So where are all the aliens?
As far as our civilization has come technologically, we are nowhere near of reaching the stars.
It takes light, the fastest thing there is in the universe, about 4.2 years to reach the nearest star to Earth, Proxima Centauri.
And there lies the problem...Space. Its unimaginably vast. If our descendants want to venture to the distant stars, they will have to invent new means for space travel.
In physics, a tunnel with two ends at separate points in spacetime is known as a wormhole. But the lack of evidence for intelligent aliens is either telling that they are extremely rare if not non-existent, or that wormholes are not physically possible.
Even with our current technologies it is estimated that the our galaxy the milky way can be colonized within less than a billion years.
So if an alien civilization with our current capabilities started colonizing the galaxy a billion years ago, we should be seeing signs of their presence by now. And if that was the case then with the words of the famous physicist Enrico Fermi, Where is everybody?
Are we Being Visited by Aliens? Neil deGrasse Tyson on UFO's
American astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson gives his take about UFO sightings and alien intelligence in general. There is a lot of video footage circulating over the internet where supposedly crafts out of this world have come to visit Earth. But do any of them hold validity? Neil degrasse Tyson remains unconvinced that any of the video footage of UAP's are out of this world.
Our galaxy the milky way is about 100,000 light years across and it contains about 100 thousand million stars. There are about 2 trillion galaxies in the observable universe. There are more stars in the Universe than there are grains of sand in all the beaches of Earth combined. Based on this fact, it seems inconceivable we are alone in the Universe.
However even if there is countless alien life out there, even countless intelligent alien life, that doesn't automatically mean we are being visited by them. That's where some people conflate these two separate concepts and think that recent video footage of UFO's must be real because the sheer number of stars suggests life is very common.
But let's say aliens are real and are visiting us. Would they classify us as intelligent among intra-galactic civilizations?
Neil deGrasse Tyson gives his honest opinion about the vast number of UFO sightings and why one should remain skeptical.
The US department of defense has declassified many UFO sightings, or as they like to call them, UAPs which stands for unidentified aerial phenomenon.
The Pentagon now reports about 400 different UFO encounters and officials say "We want to know what's out there".
It should be obvious that the released video files are not sufficient evidence to state we've been visited by aliens.
The Fermi Paradox With Neil deGrasse Tyson - Where Are All The Aliens?
Since the birth of philosophy, we've never stopped wondering about the answer to the question: Are we alone?
Neil deGrasse Tyson tackles the possibility of the prevalence of life in the cosmos by comparing our sole data-point we have, life on Earth. He points to the fact that life on Earth formed as soon as it had a chance after the late heavy bombardment period.
Neil deGrasse Tyson also extrapolates from the fossil record that Intelligence as we humans have defined it is not necessary for survival, therefore intelligent life in the cosmos might be extremely rare.
In the summer of 1950 Italian-American physicist Enrico Fermi, while walking to lunch with his fellow physicists was having a casual conversation about recent UFO reports and the possibility of faster-than-light travel. Allegedly Fermi suddenly during lunch said, "But where is everybody?
This later became known as the Fermi problem or paradox. Which is the apparent contradiction between the lack of evidence for extraterrestrial life and the high estimate probability for their existence.
