It is difficult to confirm exactly when the French composer Pierre Fontaine completed this short song, but it is likely around 1440. Fontaine was born in approximately 1380 in the city of Rouen, along the River Seine. Fontaine would be a leading figure in the Burgundian school of music, but sadly the majority of his work has been lost. What has been saved are a number of secular chansons (a lyric driven song in polyphonic form).

There are no confirmed paintings or sketches of Fontaine. The cover picture for this video is ‘Saint Jerome in his Study’ by the Dutch painter Jan van Eyck, painted in 1442. The picture you see during the video is the cover of the illuminated manuscript ‘Chroniques de Haunaut’ illustrated by Roger van der Weyden, done in 1447.
