Elgar completed a set of three works for violin and piano in 1884, collectively given the opus No. 4. This collection would be the first music Elgar published. Each of the three pieces within the collection would be dedicated to a different person.

This work was dedicated to Frank Webb, a friend of the composer and who played in the same chamber music ensemble as Elgar.
