The Rock, Op. 7 (The Crag) by Sergei Rachmaninoff

Rachmaninoff completed this symphonic poem for orchestra in 1893 in dedication to fellow composer Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The name of the work is taken from the poem of the same name by Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov. Some evidence suggests that Rachmaninoff may have also taken inspiration for this work from the short story ‘Along the Way’ by Anton Chekhov. It is likely that the first performance of this symphonic poem took place in 1896 in St Petersburg, although this is unconfirmed.
