In a vague way, it is comparable perhaps with th Friench legion, except that for the French, the legionnaires were foreign citizens, to be absorbed into France down the line, and Wagner groups is and has been from Within Russia. Wagner forces cannot fight the battle on their own and heavily depend on support from the broader Russian army, with intelligence, in logistic support, as well as air support from the Russian aerospace forces etc.
