The Stories I read...
The New York Times is reporting that top aides to Gov. Andrew Cuomo rewrote a report from state health officials, removing references to nursing home deaths that had occurred in the state. The Times writes:
"The number — more than 9,000 by that point in June — was not public, and the governor’s most senior aides wanted to keep it that way. They rewrote the report to take it out, according to interviews and documents reviewed by The New York Times."
Back up: During the height of the pandemic, Cuomo mandated that nursing homes take in covid-positive elderly patients rather than keep them isolated in hospitals. This ended up exposing thousands of elderly to the virus and led to over 15,000 deaths in NY State nursing homes.
Inside the initial report was a chart showing the total number of nursing home deaths. By the time the Cuomo aides were done with it, they cut the official number down to just 6,432. They did this by removing the elderly who contracted the virus in nursing homes but died in a hospital.
Coincidence? Around the same time, last summer 9 of New York state's top health officials quit. At the time it was reported they quit over tension with Cuomo, but did not say specifically why.
My take: The media is focusing a lot of attention on Cuomo's sexual misconduct scandals - which deserve attention. But the unprecedented, and unnecessary loss of life that took place in New York nursing homes cannot be ignored. I'm glad to see the New York Times breaking stories on this topic.

Just the news says
China is poised to eclipse the United States in the field of artificial intelligence, a government commission warned this week in a stark and comprehensive report on the growing and powerful industry.
"China's plans, resources, and progress should concern all Americans," wrote officials from the National Security Commission on Artificial Intelligence (NSCAI). "It is an AI peer in many areas and an AI leader in some applications. We take seriously China's ambition to surpass the United States as the world's AI leader within a decade."
In a stark message, commission chairmen warned: "America is not prepared to defend or compete in the AI era." and they believe "AI systems will also be used in the pursuit of power. We fear AI tools will be weapons of first resort in future conflicts."
