Two large supercells tracked across southeastern Virginia and northeastern North Carolina on Wednesday evening, bringing large hail, damaging wind, and tight rotation under a tornado warning. The first storm produced spectacular mesocyclone structure over the town of South Hill. The second storm produced quarter to golf ball sized hail, and stopped traffic on Interstate 95 near Roanoke Rapids, NC. The hail shredded vegetation and dented vehicles along the road, and stopped traffic for hours along the highway. Hail fog also quickly formed, making driving nearly impossible with visibility of only a few feet.
