Secularists often ask the question "What kind of a God would allow so much cruelty in the world?" This is based on the assumption that a God would create a world that is benevolent only to a small aspect of its creation. What we may perceive as pain and suffering to us at the time may be of benefit to us in the long run. So too at a collective level, the pain we feel as the human race may help us become more resilient as a species.
