On May 13th 2020, the Portland City Council approved a settlement payment to regular antifa protester James Mattox for $23,000, ten thousand of those dollars going to Mattox himself while thirteen thousand went to his legal team. Mattox was one of three protesters who sued the city after being injured and arrested on August 4th 2018 during a counter-protest to Patriot Prayer which involved Antifa, unions, and various social justice activist groups on the left side.
Per the lawsuit by James Mattox, “the Portland Police Bureau, without provocation, attacked a group of people who had gathered to express opposition to fascism. Defendants (meaning police) used unlawful, excessive force against plaintiffs, shooting them with rubber bullets and aerial munitions, and hitting them with batons... Defendants chose to attack plaintiff’s group in part because they disagreed with the political message of the anti-fascist demonstrators and sympathized with the fascists... The City of Portland has created an environment of militarized responses to mild forms of dissent... As a direct and proximate result of the conduct of the defendants, Mr. Mattox has sustained emotional distress, including but not limited to pain and suffering, depression, loss of self-esteem, a fear of trusting those in positions of power, a fear of trusting law enforcement, paranoia, anxiety, and sleeplessness.”
So much of this is wrong.
