Symphony No. 23 in D major, K. 181/162b by Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart

Mozart completed this symphony in 1773 shortly after returning to Salzburg from a trip around Italy with his father. By this time Mozart had a well-established reputation in Europe, particularly in Austria, and he was readily given a position as court musician for Prince-Archbishop Hieronymus Colloredo. While Mozart may have been happy with his role, being only 21 at the time, his relationship with Colloredo would soon begin to deteriorate.

This symphony is comprised of a single movement, demarked by three different time signatures. It is because of this that the work is sometimes referred to as an overture, however Mozart did include the title ‘Sinfonia” (Symphony) on the manuscript.
