This is the first documentary that made fall in love with documentaries.
It has been criticized that it is to romanticized the war itself and that it was harsher than what it is showed.
Others say many battles were left out.
You get the same arguments that LOTR received almost.
He had to tell the story in a way that kept the viewer interested. If he had went everywhere it might have been quite difficult to follow and the viewer would have lost interest.
I still think it is a huge turn around in a way to do a documentary. The movement of the camera on a picture while having sound effects and having voice over actors reading letters of what happened was quite ground breaking at the time. It made pictures come alive.
