A prominent Christian leader, Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel was in Wakeley, Sydney on April 15, 2024. The incident was broadcast live on the church's YouTube page, showing the congregation rushing to his aid as he fell to the floor. Bishop Mar Mari Emmanuel is a Christian leader of the Assyrian Church of the East, presiding over the Diocese of Canada. He was born in 1958 in Iraq to a devout Christian family and later moved to the United States, where he was ordained a deacon in 1981 and a priest in 1984. Throughout his career, Emmanuel has been an activist raising awareness of the persecution faced by Christians in the Middle East.
Riot police have arrived at a church in western Sydney where hundreds of people have flocked following the shock stabbing of as Assyrian preacher on Monday night, as capsicum spray is deployed and the street descends into mayhem.
The Australian understands Mar Mari Emmanuel from Christ the Good Shepherd church in Wakeley, and three others are being treated for stab wounds after they were stabbed at the church on Monday night.
