Everyone who has lived in post-communist Intermarium knows there is a faction of people who express genuine nostalgia for the totalitarian era that ended somewhere between 1988 and 1991 (depending on the country).

When it comes to large numbers, having a few people believing something weird or outright false is to be expected. But the so-called nostalgia for communism stands out because the segments of the populations are not negligible. Up until about 5 years ago, in some countries that segment was large enough to influence or even decide the outcome of national elections.

Also, nostalgia for the Marxist-Leninist era is sometimes present even within individuals who themselves broke the law in order to escape the regime. I've met a few of those in the United States, Israel, Sweden or the Netherlands. Individuals born and raised in the Soviet Union or in a Warsaw Pact country who broke the law in order to emigrate and get political asylum and who for some reason manifest nostalgia for the thing they've ran away from decades after that thing doesn't even exist anymore (which means that if their nostalgia is for the home country, that could be satisfied by simply moving back). Now admittedly, some did just that and were happy with the choice.

But the discussion is about those who didn't, or did and are not happy.
Who are the nostalgics? Why do they still exist? And what about those who didn't live in those times?
