The Road (2009) Movie Edit
The Road is a 2009 American post-apocalyptic survival film directed by John Hillcoat and written by Joe Penhall. Based on the 2006 novel of the same name by Cormac McCarthy, The Road stars Viggo Mortensen and Kodi Smit-McPhee as a father and his son struggling to survive.
.
After an unspecified environmental disaster, similar to nuclear war, the earth slowly dies, society collapses, and survivors struggle to cope with the harsh reality of a brutal existence among the ruins.
.
The Road received a limited release in North American cinemas in November 2009 and was released in United Kingdom cinemas in January 2010. The film received generally positive reviews from critics; the performances of Mortensen and Smit-McPhee garnered praise. It also received numerous nominations, including a BAFTA nomination for Best Cinematography.
.
A man and his young son struggle to survive after an unspecified environmental catastrophe results in an extinction event causing the death of all plant life and virtually all animal life on the planet. The man and boy travel the road to the coast hoping to find haven further south. They avoid cannibals and murderous gangs as they scavenge for supplies on their journey.
.
In The Road, only one of the characters is given a name, an old man on the road called Ely. The credits state the role of each character in place of their names.
.
In November 2006, producer Nick Wechsler used independent financing to acquire the film rights to adapt the 2006 novel The Road by Cormac McCarthy. The film had a budget of $20 million. Filming began in the Pittsburgh metropolitan area in late February 2008, continuing for eight weeks before moving to northwestern Pennsylvania, Louisiana and Oregon. Hillcoat preferred to shoot in real locations, saying, "We didn't want to go the CGI world." Pennsylvania, where most of the filming took place, was chosen for its abundance of locations that looked abandoned or decayed. Sites such as coalfields, sand dunes, and run-down parts of Pittsburgh and neighbouring boroughs provide the backdrop. Filming was also done at Conneaut Lake Park two months after the park's Dreamland Ballroom was destroyed in a fire.
.
Hillcoat said of using Pittsburgh, "It's a beautiful place in fall with the colours changing, but in winter, it can be very bleak. There are city blocks that are abandoned. The woods can be brutal." Filmmakers also shot scenes in New Orleans after Hurricane Katrina and on Mount St. Helens in Washington after the volcanic eruption. The Abandoned Pennsylvania Turnpike, a stretch of abandoned roadway between Hustontown and Breezewood, Pennsylvania, was also used for much of the production.
.
Filmmakers took advantage of days with bad weather to portray the post-apocalyptic environment. Mark Forker, the director of special effects for the film, sought to make the landscape convincing, handling sky replacement and digitally removing greenery from scenes.
