They knew who had financed and organised the International Brigades ; and with what fell purpose Barcelona had been declared in October 1936 the Capital of the Soviet States of Western Europe. At the critical moment they intervened in just sufficient strength to counter the International Brigade,and enable the Spanish people to organise their own army, which, in due course, easily settled the matter.
