Vaughan Williams completed this suite in 1939 on behalf of a commission from the British Council to be played at the World’s Fair in New York City. The work is based on the folk tune ‘Dives and Lazarus’ as well as other songs Vaughan Williams used in this English Folk Song Suite.

This work is comprised of an introduction and theme, followed by five variations:
I. Introduction and Theme: Adagio, B modal minor
II. Variant I: B modal minor
III. Variant II: Allegro moderato, B modal minor
IV. Variant III: D modal minor
V. Variant IV: L'istesso tempo
VI. Variant V: Adagio, B modal minor
