Sappho was an ancient Greek poet from Lesbos, who lived in the 6th century BC. She is considered one of the greatest lyric poets of all time, and her poems express her personal feelings and emotions about love, family, and religion. She wrote in a dialect of Greek called Aeolic, and used a variety of poetic forms and meters. She also ran a school for young women, where she taught them poetry and music. She is the source of the words 'sapphic' and 'lesbian', which refer to female homosexuality.
