Papillon, Op. 77 by Gabriel Fauré

Fauré completed this short work for cello and piano in 1885 after the success of his previous work for cello and piano, Élégie, in 1883. The work would not be published until 1898 due to a difficult relationship between the composer and the publishing house. The publisher was keen to give the work a notable yet abstract title and suggested ‘Papillon (Butterfly)’, to which Fauré replied ‘Butterfly or Dung Fly, call it whatever you like’.

This piece is comprised of a single movement.
