Tchaikovsky completed this concerto in 1893, the same year as his death. It would be the last work Tchaikovsky composed. The first performance of the work took place after the death of Tchaikovsky, in January of 1895 in St Petersburg. The work had originally been conceived as a symphony in E-flat major, however after several revisions Tchaikovsky adapted the work into a piano concerto.

The concerto is comprised of one movement, though sometimes the ‘Andante and Finale’ is omitted from performances.
