Alvíssmál - A Reading
Alvíssmál (The Lay of Alvís/The Words of the All-Wise) | The Poetic Edda
Translated by Henry A. Bellows | Recorded by Folkbuilder Nicholas Rice
Alvíssmál involves Thor engaging in a verbal contest with the dwarf Alvíss. The narrative revolves around Alvíss visiting Thor's home and seeking to marry Thor's daughter, Thrúðr. However, Thor, skeptical of Alvíss's intentions, decides to put the dwarf's knowledge to the test by engaging him in a series of questions.
Alvíss arrives at Thor's hall and expresses his desire to marry Thrúðr. Thor, protective of his daughter, agrees to the marriage under the condition that Alvíss can answer a series of questions. Thor cunningly selects questions that span various topics, from the natural world to mythology, hoping to outwit the dwarf.
As Alvíss answers each question, he inadvertently exposes himself to the harmful rays of the sunrise. Dwarves, traditionally associated with darkness and subterranean realms, are susceptible to the sunlight. By the time Alvíss answers the final question, he turns to stone as the first rays of sunlight touch him.
The poem delves into themes of wit, wisdom, and the power dynamics between different mythical beings. Thor, known for his physical strength, showcases his cleverness and cunning in outsmarting Alvíss. The questions also provide insights into Norse cosmology and the world's creation, featuring elements of mythological lore.
Alvíssmál serves as an example of the rich oral tradition in Norse literature, where stories were passed down through poetic forms. The use of a contest or challenge is a recurring motif in Norse mythology, highlighting the importance of wit and intelligence alongside physical prowess.
Alvíssmál is a poetic and mythological account of Thor's verbal contest with the dwarf Alvíss, emphasizing the significance of intellectual prowess in addition to physical strength in Norse mythology.
