Algae spores may be able to survive a meteor fall, according to research by Dina Pasini of the University of Kent.
Her team made the decision to imitate the conditions of early life by using a single-celled, ocean-dwelling algae.
They started by creating rock and ice pellets that had the algae imbedded in them.
Subsequently, they achieved amazing speeds with an apparatus that employed a two-stage light gas cannon.
The pellets were fired at a speed of 6.93 km/s through the water.
Thankfully, some of the spores survived.
However, the number of deaths increased with speed.
